MONOCHROME MONDAY # 7

In Sospel, South of France
An old little shop "Haberdasher's shop/notions shop"

From colored version to B&W

This OCTROI sign in the same place, an interesting detail of the surrounding wall.

The place where you had to pay taxes at the entrance of Sospel.

It's the original version, I'haven't changed colors, they're just Monochome "stone". On the right, it is written 'Fondation Patrimoine' / heritage foundation.

And this Monochrome cat met randomly in the streets of Sospel. Not quite entirely Monochrome but I couldn't resist.

I was no forerunner - I grew up with B&W. It was the norm.

  12. These are wonderful. The black and white version makes the image timeless.

I would not have resisted the cat, either.

  13. Hi Catherine,

the archway works well in mono and colour but imagine having to pay a tax to enter a town; some towns would remain empty.
I love the cat, of course!

  14. Arches and old signage what a wonderful two fold find. I do like the mood the B&W causes it has always made photos timeless for me.
Thank you for the Wikipedia link that was good to know too.

  18. Pour Webradio, l'octroi était une vieille taxe sur l'importation de marchandises dans les villes (et aussi le nom de l'administration qui percevait cette taxe). Personnellement je préfère la version couleur délavée.

  20. Nice post. I'm not sure if I like the photo better in color or B&W. Both have special qualities about them.

  22. Ah, yes, we do have a similar picture! I love both the b&w and the coloured version - which has an old and faded look about it. It is wonderful what can be found just around a corner.

And your red Metro signs are great too. Some signs become iconic.

That curled up kitty is the sweetest.

  24. The cat is perfect! I love your first photo. I think it looks better in monochrome than in colour - it has an ancient appearance.
